A huntress. A “beast” of faerie. And a shadow enveloping the world. In March 2021, news of a new adaptation of Sarah J Maas’s A Court of Thorns and Roses book into a series caused a huge stir in the Maasiverse. Here’s everything we know about the upcoming ACOTAR TV show by Hulu.

Upcoming ACOTAR TV Show on Hulu

After selling over 12 million copies of her books, translated into 37 languages, and winning 7 literary awards from 18 nominations, Sarah J Maas is finally getting a TV adaptation. And it’s not Throne of Glass, but A Court of Roses and Thorns (ACOTAR) that’s been picked up by Hulu for a TV series.

It’s exciting because Maas is actively involved in the show as creator-writer, and she’s working with none other than Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek (Next Gen) and Outlander producer, Ronald D Moore. Plus this is a major foray into the fantasy space for Hulu, so keen to see what they do with it.

And, over the past 5 months at least, Maas has been meeting for 4 hours per day with the show writers, meaning the ACOTAR TV show is definitely in pre-production – maybe even moving to production…

Wait, So, Will There Really be A Court of Thorns and Roses TV show?

Yes! There’s been a lot of speculation and many people think it’s not real – perhaps because it’s already been 2 years since the announcement. But mainly because Sarah J Maas and Maasiverse fans have been let down before.

You might remember Maas herself posting on her Instagram about a potential adaptation of her other book series, Throne of Glass in 2016.

Well, that never happened… meaning TOG was probably never picked up by a studio. It doesn’t even have an IMDB page.

But the A Court of Thorns and Roses TV show is real and happening.

It was announced apparently by “accident” by Maas’s husband Josh when he posted a random sandwich pic with a note on the picture about an ACOTAR adaptation on March 26 2021. (Which funny enough was the last post from that account, ever, it seems.)

And Maas herself confirmed it all on Instagram the same day, and the news broke in the mainstream media directly after.

And, 19 months later, it was confirmed that Maas is working at least 4 hours per day, every day, meeting with the ACOTAR TV Show writers, Ronald Moore and a showrunner – confirmed in October 2022.

A Court of Thorns and Roses Premise

Set in a world where the fae has sequestered themselves from humans – for mutual protection. ACOTAR tells the story of a young human huntress, Feyre Archeron, who kills a wolf in the wild and is beset by a vicious “beast” and taken away to the mythical faerie lands of Prythian as punishment.

(That’s a nod to the original Beauty and the Beast inspiration for the book. But it then turned into something all its own.)

Feyre then learns her captor, Tamlin, is not so much a beast as one of the immortal fae. And he’s rather easy on the eyes and quite alluring. But then an ancient shadow rises. A threat so dire, it threatens all the lands of the fae, and Feyre might have the key to stopping it – or dooming Talin and his kind forever.

Sounds great! But announced in 2021 and it’s now already 2023 – what on earth is taking so long?

Like we said, it’s confirmed that Sarah Maas was spending hours every day on pre-production for the show, about six months ago. This was highlighted by TikTok user @randomvirgoreads…

This checks out because Elizabeth Egan did write a piece on Sarah Maas in the New York Times (see it here) where Maas confirms it.

Who’s Working on the Show With Maas?

So far, we only know that Maas is working with the show writers and that Ronald D Moore is on board with the production – but not as the showrunner.

That’s quite exciting, though, since Moore was behind shows like Outlander on Netflix, and wrote and produced a lot of the Star Trek Next Generations-era movies and series (which are getting a third-season send-off on Amazon Prime in February 2023 – see it under the new sci-fi series in February), as well as Battlestar Galactica.

All of which just means, the ACOTAR TV show is in really good creative hands.

A Court of Thorns and Roses Cast

Now, there’s been a lot of speculation and fancasts. But, at the moment, there is no info yet on the cast for the ACOTAR series.

A lot of people are saying they hope to see the likes of Riverdale’s Madelaine Petsch, Warm Bodies’ Teresa Palmer or British actress Millie Brady as Feyre. And some want to see Vampire Diaries’ Ian Somerhalder or even Matthew Daddario as Rhysand, with maybe Liam Hemsworth or Mortal Instruments’ Jamie Campbell Bower as Tamlin.

But those are just hopes and fancasts, nothing concrete yet.

ACOTAR TV Series Release Date

There is also no official release date yet for A Court of Thorns and Roses on Hulu. But, maybe we can speculate a bit…

(Video) Reading the ACOTAR series in one week…

See, shows normally take around 16 months to produce. And we know that ACOTAR is at least in pre-production.

And, if you take into account that Ronald Moore knows his stuff – his most recent work, Outlander, was announced in July 2012 and aired in August 2014, that’s 2 years exactly. Well, then it’s not too much of a stretch to speculate that we might see an ACOTAR TV show somewhere between 16 and 24 months from now.

So, we could see A Court of Thorns and Roses as a TV show, perhaps between mid 2024 and early-to-mid 2025.

But that’s just speculation, we’ll have to wait and see.
